Make A Deer Corridor   -  12/18/2014

GO Outdoor University - Vol. 9.
By: J. Wayne Fears
Feature Article - How to - Tips Here is a question I get regularly, "Recently, our club property was visited by a state DNR deer biologist. We invited him to look at our property to advise us on why we were never seeing any of the mature bucks residing on the property, except at night. Our club is 1200 acres, made up of several hardwood wetlands dotted around a mixture of pasture and pine ridges. We know the bucks spend most of their time in the thick wetlands and come out to feed in our food plots at night. We are a "still hunt only" club. The biologist told us that since we do not have any deer corridors on our property we should do drives to push the bucks out of the wetlands. We don't want to do that. Is there any way we could develop deer corridors?"

Feature Article - Adventure - How to - Tips THE WHITETAIL SLAM
By Bob Humphrey

Sheep hunters first borrowed the term Grand Slam from baseball to recognize the accomplishment of taking one of each of the North American sheep recognized by the Boone & Crockett Club: Dall's, Rocky Mountain bighorn, Desert bighorn, and Stone's. Later, turkey hunters applied the term to taking each of the four recognized subspecies of North American wild turkey: eastern, Rio Grande, Merriam's, and Osceola. Now we have caribou slams, moose slams and even a Super Slam, coined by bowhunter Chuck Adams, the first to all of the North American big game species with a bow.

Deer hunters love to talk about the rut more than any other subject under the whitetail hunting umbrella. From the beginning of bow season (and even before), discussions of rattling, grunting, chasing and scrapes are the topics of choice over morning coffee. By the time mid to late October rolls around, when the leaves are changing and the weather begins to cool, it might be harder to judge who's more in heat: the hunters or the does.

Early Season Scrape Line

More is better...It is proven, to better your success in using Whitetail Deer Lure you need to dispense amounts equal to that, what a deer would urinate, which is 4-6 ounces. Every year 1,000’s of hunters use scent without the success they expected. Because of the expense of the scent and stores selling in 2 ounce bottles many hunters only use a squirt to ½ ounce per hunt which quickly evaporates and becomes ineffective?

The bull darted though the small saplings, stopped, and bugled. The magnificent roar echoed through the tall pine forest. I cow called once, and the bull headed my way, glunking with every step. At 30 yards, the bull stopped and bugled again. I realized this was the caliber of bull I was looking for.

When I was 15 I was walking down an old logging road with my rifle slung over my shoulder - feeling for all the world like Jack O'Connor. (I might have even have been wearing a cowboy hat.) Thick laurel bordered the road and visibly was limited. I hadn't gone far when the largest whitetail buck I'd ever seen bounded out, stopped and looked me right in the eye. I struggled to find my breath and to bring my rifle to bear but was too slow doing both and he was gone. Forever.
